Thanks – or no thanks, really – to back to back global cyber attacks in Q2 of this year, overall cyber threats were way up, but those isolated WannaCry and NotPetya incidents weren’t the sole reasons for the increase.
According to Fortinet’s Q2 report on global attacks, overall volume on exploits rose a staggering 30% from Q1 to Q2. The cybersecurity company cited risky apps and an increase in encrypted traffic as major reasons for the overall bump.
For hackers, though, when the cat’s away, the mice shall play. One trend is changing, according to the report, as attack volumes “have often been synchronized to normal work schedules. As digital business models now operate around the clock, and many attacks have become automated, this trend has begun to change. In fact, 44% of all exploit attempts occurred on either Saturday or Sunday during Q2, with the average daily attack volume over the weekend (when IT teams are largely at home) reaching twice that of weekdays.”
There was one bright spot in the report, however: apps based in the cloud were rarely targeted and prove that operations being managed in the cloud have a strong protection layer.
