Jim Goddard

Jim Goddard is the vice president and chief information security officer (CISO) for Kaiser Permanente, one of America’s leading health care providers and not-for-profit health plans, currently serving more than 12.2 million members in eight states and the District of Columbia. Founded in 1945, Kaiser Permanente has a mission to provide high-quality, affordable health care and improve the health of our members and the communities we serve. Jim has extensive experience building and leading information security, corporate compliance, audit, and risk management teams. In his current role, his mission is to reduce the probability and impact of a successful cyber attack by applying safeguards that obstruct the path of a threat. This strengthens the trust members and patients have in Kaiser Permanente’s technology and allows them to improve their lives with high quality, affordable, and secure care delivery. He leads a team of over 300 people to deliver innovative solutions to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the organization’s information and systems. Jim also serves as the accountable executive for one of Kaiser Permanente’s largest information technology investment programs. He is responsible for establishing and leading the strategy for the organization’s response to the growing threat landscape to continue to protect our members, patients, customers, employees, and physicians. Prior to being named Kaiser Permanente’s CISO, Jim served as executive director of the Cyber Risk Defense Center, Kaiser Permanente’s state-of-the-art facility that monitors and responds to threats around the clock. He directed a team of over 60 people to continuously analyze and respond to cyber threats to protect Kaiser Permanente. Jim joined Kaiser Permanente in 2014 from Hewlett Packard, where he was the managing principal for the West/Midwest regions for HP’s cyber security consulting practice. He assessed, designed, and directed the implementation of security monitoring and incident response for clients, and managed and mitigated cyber breaches for his clients. He was known for his industry thought leadership and published white papers and was a frequent speaker at leading security industry conferences. Earlier in his career, Jim served as CEO and President of Foxcatch, Inc., where he designed the first mobile biometric authentication technology through a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) grant. He started his career at IBM, where he managed over 350 security professionals around the world in ten security centers that protected over 2,500 customers from cyber threats. Jim served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, where he led a forward support logistics unit of 40 soldiers in the 4th infantry Division. He holds a bachelor’s in international relations from West Point, and a master’s in telecommunications from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado and holds patents to three security technology applications. He is a frequently sought-after speaker and panelist and recently presented at several conferences including Epic, NH-ISAC, and Advisen Risk Insights. Jim lives in Longmont, Colorado, with his wife and son.
