Thien La joined Humana in 2019 as Vice President, Head of Innovation, Architecture, Engineering and Risk for the Cyber Security department. Prior to Humana, Thien was the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield for almost 4 years. At Wellmark, he was responsible for integrating security with the business, managing information risks strategically, and continuing to work toward a culture of shared cyber risk ownership across the enterprise. Information security includes measuring an organization's process maturity, and ensuring information stays safe as Wellmark considers new technology models.La was formerly senior vice president, business information security officer for Global Banking and Markets where he headed a global information security team supporting more than 50,000 users globally. Previously, Thien served at SunGard Data Systems as vice president, global head of application risk management and business continuity. He also spent more than 10 years at Goldman Sachs as a vice president in technology risk where he held various leadership positions in cyber security and risk management. He was also an active member of the Amazon Web Services CISO Council, a board member of the H-ISAC, chair of the FS-ISAC application security product group and a member of the Financial Services Cybersecurity Roundtable led by the U.S. Treasury Department.
The CISO or Security Executive has always had an essential role in policy creation and enforcement as well as risk and liability management. However going forward, today’s CISO will be more and more called upon to not only ensure security and protect data, but also to find new sources of value creation for the enterprise. CISOs who possess a mix of both hard technical and analytical skills along with soft interpersonal and leadership skills will be poised to thrive in an expanded role of enterprise value creation, both proactively and reactively.
